We cut this mini dress from black stretch velvet with a soft pile that catches the room light. The pattern pairs long sleeves with a deep V neckline and gathers along the waist to build natural give across the middle. It fits close down through the hem and sits above the knee for evening wear.

• Stretch velvet fabric. We chose a high-stretch velvet with a soft hand and a double layer through the body. The knit base allows the cloth to hug close while keeping its recovery after hours of wear.
• Waist ruching. Side gathering along the waistline creates soft horizontal folds across the middle. This detail adds texture to the velvet surface and accommodates movement through the hips.
• Sleeve and neckline. Long set-in sleeves balance the open V neckline and the short hem. The stretch fabric lets you push the sleeves up along the forearm if you prefer a gathered, shorter length.
• Care and wash. Machine wash cold inside out on a gentle cycle, preferably in a mesh bag to protect the velvet pile. Lay it flat to dry instead of using high heat to preserve the elastane.
